New

My cage has many rooms,
Damask and dark,
Nothing there sings,
Not even a lark.

Larks never will you know,
When they're captive,
Teach me to be,
More adaptive...

As I'm writing this, I can see a bank of clouds approaching. The tips of the nearest bits are tinged a dusky pink, with a few glints of orange. But, as your eye travels along the line, the pink drowns into purple, which fades gradually to a deep, sickly, grayish blue. It's like a wall that's alive, moving slowly forward. You can only accept it and hope that the wind won't pick you up and blow you away.

Last night, the sky was perfectly clear. I went and stood in my driveway for about an hour and just looked at the stars. I didn't have shoes on. But it was so beautiful I just stayed there and sang for a while. I hardly remember what - but among the songs I sang, the last was Green Finch and Linnet Bird, from Sweeney Todd.

It's a powerful song about captivity and the feeling of being powerless. The lyrics are quite depressing. However, if you look deeper, it is actually a cheerful song. The character admits she is not allowed to "fly," however, she embraces the fact that her spirit is kept alive through the power of her dreams, her song.

If I cannot fly,
Let me sing...

So, it was late at night, I was a bit cold, and I was singing a song that holds a lot of meaning for me. All of the sudden, the wind started to pick up. It was somewhat frightening. The sky was still completely clear, the stars were shining, yet it felt like a hurricane. Branches were tossing about, the screen door started slamming violently against siding, and I could barely hear myself.

But I finished the song.

Something

The twinkle
Of teardrops -
Glistening like gold -
Call to angels:
Send the rain
Plunge me into cold.
